The most popular emblem of Star Wars was not supposed to have the growing importance he possessed in the films; he was not even supposed to be Luke Skywalker’s secret genitor, but more simply a very charismatic menace that didn’t hold any deeper purpose – other than being feared by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke. Obviously, Lucas got rid of the idea and we now got Darth Vader (which, according to Lucas in a 2005 interview for Rolling Stones magazine, is supposed to be reminescent of ‘Dark Father’).
